Connelly Coders Take 2nd Place!

Connelly students, Juliana Resong '17 and Maggie Laton '18, participated in an All Girls Robotics Showcase in Thousand Oaks on April 9, 2106. 32 teams competed, including teams from Mexico City, Great Britain, and Puerto Rico, as well as teams from Northern and Southern California. Representing the Connelly Coders, Juliana and Maggie placed 2nd! Congratulations!

Channing Lee Takes 2nd Place at OC Science & Engineering Fair!

Congratulations to Channing Lee '19, for taking 2nd place in the category of Biological Product Science at the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair on April 17. Her project was titled: Battle of the Beverages: Sports Drinks vs. fruit juices. Which has a higher conductance, meaning the most electrolytes? Great job, Channing!

We received many kind words and letters from the venues we volunteered at for All-School Service Day on Tuesday, April 12. This is just one that we received, but it really represents all the students at all of the venues.

"I just wanted to thank you for coordinating the visit of Connelly students here at John Marshall Elementary.

WOW! They were incredible! They listened to many of my students read, and asked the most intelligent, thoughtful comprehension questions afterward. They helped the kids organize their thoughts into great written answers also. My students enjoyed their attention tremendously, and had a great time with them.

Congratulations Academic Decathletes!

Cornelia Connelly School competed in their first Academic Decathlon in late January. Students spent two Saturdays testing their knowledge against 600 competitors from over 30 schools in Orange County. Although this was the first year Connelly fielded a team, they did exceptionally well within their Division winning over 32 individual medals.

On February 17, the students were awarded medals at the awards ceremony. The areas that the Connelly students particularly exceeded in and won the most medals were in the areas of Interview, Language and Literature, and Social Science. Four students received first place medals in Interview. In the division in which they competed, the Connelly team earned third place in SuperQuiz, and ultimately won the First Place Overall Team award!

The United States Academic Decathlon (http://usad.org) and its regional branch in Orange County (http://www.ocde.us/Decathlon/) is dedicated to promoting academic excellence in high schools. In the program, students study and learn material covering ten different subjects that revolve around a yearly curricular theme; this year was India.

Members of Connelly's Academic Decathlon team included Viviana Gonzalez, Catherine McIntosh, Isabella Nguyen, Sarah Ortiz, Isabelle Panganiban, Juliana Resong, Tatiana Sanden, Diana Solis, Katherine Tinio, Christine Vu, Veronica Wareham, and Colleen Wolfe. They were coached by Connelly science teacher, Mr. Franklin Parmar.

Good Citizen Award Winner - Noelle Fischer

Congratulations to Connelly senior, Noelle Fischer for being chosen as the winner of the Good Citizen award from Daughters of the American Revolution. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree. Noelle's essay was chosen as the winner from entries from public and private high schools, winning the Mojave District award. Congratulations! Noelle was presented the award by State Assembly person Young Kim at a ceremony that was held at the Fullerton Library on Saturday, March 19. 

California Youth in Theatre Day

Joanna Juarez, a Connelly sophomore and Tri-School Theatre member, attended California Youth in Theatre day on March 15 in Sacramento. California Youth in Theatre is a statewide celebration honoring the youth of California for their accomplishments in theatre arts and to acknowledge the many individuals and organizations that support and contribute to theatre education for all grade levels - school administrators, teachers, parents, legislators and other officials. Joanna Juarez was one of four Tri-School students chosen to meet with different legislative offices, senators and assembly member to advocate equality of the arts in education, specifically Senate Bill 916, which would establish single-subject teaching credentials for Dance and Theatre in California. It was a great experience for all the students, who did a great job promoting the arts. Joanna even performed a song at the general assembly to an audience of over 300 students and teachers from around the state!

National Honor Society Welcomes New Members

Congratulations to the newest members of Connelly's National Honor Society! Eligibility for membership into the National Honor Society is determined by a cumulative grade point average which must meet or exceed our chapter's standard for Scholarship, which is currently set at 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. Students must also be up to date with their service hours. The following girls have met, and/or exceeded these high academic standards, and are current with their service hours. They are to be commended for this accomplishment!

College Tour

Dear Parents of the Class of 2017 and 2018,

This is a reminder that Cornelia Connelly School will be offering our inaugural college tour this June. The college search and application process can be an incredibly exciting, overwhelming, and at times stressful experience for families. This trip is not designed to take the place of visiting schools as a family, as we know family visits are an important part of the search process, but rather is meant to supplement those visits. Our goal in offering this tour is to make the college search more efficient and enjoyable for the entire family.

Here are five reasons why we think our college tour should play an important role in your daughter's college search:

1. Fit: By visiting a wide variety of schools - large, small, public, private, urban, rural, religious, secular - students gain a better sense of the types of schools that will be the right fit for them. There is no better way for students to know what kind of schools they're looking for than visiting in person and getting a "gut feeling" on campus. Future visits as a family will be more meaningful by focusing on the schools that are the right fit. 
2. Demonstrated interest: Colleges are increasingly aware of how much interest a student has expressed in their campus. They want to know what kind of contact a student has had during the admissions process, and how serious each applicant is about attending their school. Visiting a college once with counselors and again with family can be a great way to show demonstrated interest.
3. Motivation: College visits will help students understand the college admissions process and what's required of them to be successful. Visiting campuses can light a motivational fire, as students have seen first-hand the experience that awaits them at various colleges, and hear what it takes to get accepted.
4. Community knowledge: We will be traveling with a local tour guide, who will help students understand more about the unique culture of each city we're visiting, and how the colleges play a role in that community. We'll also be visiting historical and cultural sites in Boston and New York.
5. Confidence: Visiting campuses will give students a better grasp of the vocabulary used in the college admissions process. This will help students clearly articulate their preferences. Traveling with a group of her peers will allow your daughter to gain confidence in herself and her ability to navigate this process.

Our tour will be visiting Boston & New York City from June 13-17, 2016. We will be taking guided tours of each campus, and learning more about Christian life on campus. We encourage you to strongly consider this opportunity for your daughter
