Cornelia Connelly School junior Nicole Rickard won the California Youth in Theatre Day (CYIT) Essay Contest. Nicole wrote an essay on the importance of educational theatre, and because her entry was selected, she received a scholarship to pay for her registration and partial transportation to the daylong Sacramento event on March 13. She met with legislators and read her essay at the Capitol, in a Senate room.
"We are incredibly proud of Nicole for this achievement," said Hillary Pearson, Executive Artistic Director of Tri-School Theatre. "Nicole is the first student from Tri-School Theatre to win this (statewide) essay contest."
Rickard joined Connelly senior Danielle Velasco, who (earlier in the year) won a scholarship from California Thespians to attend the same event, based on her monologue audition.
California Youth in Theatre (CYIT) Day is an annual celebration of educational theatre at the California State Capitol. Award-winning students of all ages gather from around the state to perform, take workshops and meet legislators. CYIT's purpose is to honor the achievement of arts students while emphasizing the vital role theatre plays as a core subject in the educational development of each student in California.
